Three wolves at Skanes Djurpark: No Longer

Swedish Radio News reports that all 12 wolves at the Skanes Djurpark zoo in Höör in southern Sweden have been put to death.

This follows the second escape of two young male wolves from their enclosure. In the second incident, which occurred Saturday, three other wolves followed. The zoo was evacuated after the escape, although Skanes Djurpark says visitors were never in any danger.

After the second escape the five wolves involved were put to death. Since one of them was the leader of the pack, the decision was made to kill the other wolves as well. The zoo says that in the leader’s absence, the other wolves would have tried to escape as well.

This comes a week after the controversial cull of wild wolves around Sweden, a move that resulted in a flood of protest letters to the authorities here, both from within Sweden and from abroad.
